Iago is one of the many well formed characters in William Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello. Shakespeare uses many writing strategies to develop Iago and his plan. By using carefully thought-out actions and word choices , Iago is able to manipulate others to do things that benefits him and gets him closer to completing the goals he has in mind . In this play he is the person that ultimately lead to the end of the play. Iago is not the normal villain in any play. The role he plays is unique, far from what one might expect from a character in a play. Iago is not only very smart, but he is also very manipulative which makes him very interesting . This gives him a very large edge in the play. That is why he is most successful throughout the play. He goes most of the play with everyone under his spell. Everyone had no clue because he was so manipulative. He uses many writing strategies to give him an edgeincluding Pathos and Ethos. He also uses animal imagery to manipulate his comrades Without these two strategies Iago would not have gotten as far as he did with his plan.Throughout the tragedy Othello, Iago uses Pathos to manipulate his comrades so he can move on with his plan. As Othello and Iago are talking Iago gives an image for Othello to visualize in his head. “Or to be naked in bed with her friend”…. (4.1.4-5). Here Iago is giving Othello a image of Cassio and Desdemona in bed together. By putting this image in Othello’s head, Iago is able to get Othello to feel upset and mad by thinking of his wife sleeping with another man. This gets Othello to start to become suspicious about Cassio and Desdemona sleeping together and makes him think that they did sleep with each other. Another example of Pathos used by Iago to manipulate his comrades so he can move on with his plan, is when Iago tells Othello not to be jealous. “O, beware, my lord, of jealousy! It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.” (3.3.195-197). By telling Othello not to be jealous, he puts jealousy in Othello’s mind. By playing with Othello’s feelings he is able to get him jealous and Othello lets that take him over. By doing this Iago’s plan will continue to work perfect and he is able to move on with the next part of his plan. Another writing strategy that Iago uses is Ethos. He especially uses Ethos to make himself look good to Othello. “I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth than it should do offense to Michael Cassio.” (2.3.236-237). Iago tells Montano knowing that Othello is listening that he does not want to offend Cassio. By doing this he present a genius act of credibility and makes him look good. Another example of Ethos Iago uses to manipulate his comrades so he can move on with his plan is when he Shows his loyalty to Othello. “My friend is dead. ‘Tis done at your request. But let her live” (3.4.539-540). By saying that he will kill Cassio even though he is his friend because Othello told him to shows his loyalty. He also suggests that Desdemona should live to show his virtue. By doing all of this it makes him seem that he is on Othello’s side and is not scheming against him and his wife. This makes his plan work even more and make him a genius on how he is able to fool his lord. Throughout the tragedy Othello Iago is one of the many interesting characters. He is able to use Pathos and Ethos to make most of his plan work. Without the strategies Shakespeare uses throughout the play, his plan would not have been as successful. By using carefully thought-out actions and words, Iago is able to manipulate and take advantage of others others to do things in a way that benefits him and gets him closer to his goals. Iago is not only very smart, but he is also very good at playing people. This gives him a great advantage in the play. That is why he is most successful throughout the play. He goes most of the play with everyone under his spell.
