Nowadays, that it became a make-or-break chance for

Nowadays, it’s undeniable that a high school diploma
is not enough for students who are eager to have a good command of one
particular field. In order to acquire more professional knowledge, many people will
attend college or university where they provide specific majors. For this
reason, college entrance exams are available for students to take as an eye to going
to their dream universities. Every year a number of seniors of high school strive
to scrape through these exams. It seems that most people are accustomed to this
type of exam and they accept it to some degree. However, a question about these
exams’ credibility has been brought up. Although this issue is a controversial
one, I’m convinced that the current college entrance exams are neither equitable
nor suitable, for their design has major drawbacks and they bring about some
negative impacts.

To begin with, most college entrance exams
worldwide give rise to misconceptions among students, educators, and parents. In
some countries, universities only take the exam as the decisive factor to determine
and select students. Therefore, some people will hold the opinion that if they
don’t be excel in the exam, they won’t be successful in their rest of lives.  It’s inappropriate to let
such a rumor circulate or even be believed by the public. In fact, the whole
problem exactly arises from the exam’s monopoly on admission decisions.

     Beset with
this problem, governments and experts must revise the current system. Such tragedy also happens in Taiwan. In the past, if our students
wanted to study at university, they had no alternative but to take the Joint
College Entrance Examination, which is similar to SAT. Since it was the only
way to receive higher education, the exam at last contributed to a
misunderstanding that it became a make-or-break chance for every participant. Fortunately,
with the benefit of more and more examples, we were aware of this situation
years ago; consequently, our college entrance system has been under several
revisions. In addition to college entrance exams, we provide different ways for
students to enter universities. To be precise, specialty exams are implemented
for those who have a particular interest in one field. For example, students
having a talent for sports may only take “skills test.” In this way, there is
no need for them to assume the academic burden.

     Aside from
the social impacts that the exam exerts, considering the exam contents, current
college entrance exams aren’t impartial. Every year, students struggle to revise
for all types of college entrance exams in order to be admitted to prestigious
universities. In this case, it’s doubtful that the exam should be fair enough
for students to sit. However, a number of exams in effect contain serious
defects, including the validity and reliability of the test paper. Take SAT for
example. SAT, standing for Scholastic Aptitude Test, is held by College Board
in the U.S.A. It is used as a standard to make sure students around the world
are eligible to enter American universities or to apply for scholarships. Despite
the fact that the authority has revised parts of the test recently, it seems
that they still neglect the validity problem of the test content. In general, the
organizer of the exam has set up a question database which is the source of each
test. At the same time, there is a distinct possibility that the questions may
repeat in different places. In the light of this, many people begin to gather
and analyze the tested questions so that workable examination questions are
thrown out by some institutions before the official exam, which leads to the leakage
problem.  Under this circumstance, those cheating behaviors
have a great impact on the validity of the exam and the students’ future
academic performances.

     For one
thing, the so-called “jijing” totally
undermines the credibility of the exam.  Thus, it’s obvious that the colleges themselves no
longer wholly trust the SAT as before. For another thing, students who utilize
“jijing” to enter the college will
come across obstacles in the future. Since those tested subjects are regarded
as the prerequisite to advanced courses in universities, students who don’t
satisfy the conditions probably can’t catch up with others or even fail their courses
at the college. Thus, it demonstrates that current college exam not only loses
its original purpose and feasibility but also creates a knotty new problem.

     In addition
to the credibility problems, the college entrance exams’ questions are widely considered
too slavish. Reasonably, the purpose of the questions in the exam should test whether
the candidates can grasp the main points of a subject and whether or not they
can apply the knowledge. Nevertheless, current entrance exams mostly emphasize objective
questions. Seeing that, students develop the wrong studying habits. Therefore, we can know that the exam’s questions nowadays deviate from the
original intention which should be more diverse and flexible. The ideal exams
have to spur students to ponder, to acquire the ability of collecting and collating
information, and to put what they have learned into practice. After all, the university
is suitable for students who can make the best use of the knowledge and possess
the critical thinking. Via the current entrance exams, it’s a pity that we only
make students rigidly memorize the knowledge. As a result, I don’t reckon that
the ongoing exams assist students in the future.

     To sum up, no
one can deny that college plays an important role in our society. People pursue
a college degree not only to enhance their interpersonal skills but also to be equipped
with specialties so that they are more likely to find decent jobs in the future
or figure out their life plans. Even though we all understand that university
is not obligatory for everyone, it’s a fact that attending university still predominates
after students graduate from high school. As such, college entrance exams, as the
momentous student-selecting system, must be fair and qualified. Nonetheless, clearly,
current entrance exams are not well-organized and comply with higher
education’s requirement. As a consequence, the authority must address this
crucial issue in terms of the questions’ design and their role in students’
life.
