and parental failure, the unnamed main character was abused by his father and
thought violence was the way to go. The narrator and his friends were very
angry, and ended up trying to hang a kid called Simpson for lying about
sleeping with a girl, the main characters dad got notice of the incident and
got very mad at his son, the son told his father to just kill him, and the dad
told him he was a true son of Satan, before beating up his son, the main

“Son of Satan” is written by Charles Bukowski, and was released in 1982. Charles
Bukowski was a very productive American novel writer, and mostly wrote about
love, social problems or poverty.

The narrator of the story is a 1. Person narrator and is told in
retrospect, we can see that because he is saying things like, I was, they were
etc. “We laughed. We moved in closer to Simpson. Suddenly I shot a hard right
to his belly. (page 40, Line 1-2) we can see in the quote he is using words
like, we laughed, which means it already happened.

The narrator is also the main character, the narrator is a very negative
person, in the start of the short story, it’s revealed he’s eleven years old
and smokes “we sat on the grass in the sun behind my father’s garage and smoked
cigarettes (Page 39, Line 2-3) already of the bat we can tell he’s in a bad environment
and he’s trying to act tough by smoking.

The main character is also the narrator of the short story, we can tell
what kind of person he is from his actions and his attitude. Right of the bat
we’re told he’s smoking and cursing, “”I don’t believe you’ve ever fucked
anybody but yourself!” I said” (Page
39, Line 36) which is bad. Between the lines we can tell he’s trying to act
tough in front of Hass and Morgan by smoking, and he keeps harassing Simpson to
show dominance in front of his friends even though he wanted to stop. “I felt
like letting him go” (Page 40 Line 33) “But I was the young leader. I couldn’t
show any sympathy” (Page 40 Line 34-35) We can tell he only kept going because
he wanted to seem cool in front of Hass and Morgan. The narrator was also the leader
of a little group that consist of him and his two friends, Hass and Morgan. The
main character is the leader of the group hence why he’s the first who starts
talking to Simpson, and suggests they should punish him for lying about
sleeping with a girl.

The theme of the short story is violence,
abuse and parental failure. The kids are at a young age influenced by their parent’s
behavior, and from the short story, we can tell that the narrators father was a
violent man, which made the narrator think the only rational way to handle the
situation with Simpson, was to be violent and harass him.
