The demand of medicinal
plants is increasing day by day at global level because of revival of interest
in the medicinal plants due to their natural ameliorative essential oils,
edible herbs, standardized extracts derived from plants and
phytopharmaceuticals. Due to large usage of plants and plants based products,
there is an increase in the destruction of natural vegetation causing a threat
to plant resources moving towards depletion. According to the reports of IUCN,
nearby 30,000 plant species are in danger all over the world.  (Walter and Gillet, 1998, and Verma et al., 2002). Attention given for
conservation of the plant species is still at a very low rate which needs to be
taken in care. (Natesh,  2001). There is
a greater need for the study of traditional medicines, bioprospecting for the
derivation of drugs in an organized and systematized way for the conservation
of medicinal plants. For this purpose in
vitro micropropagation or tissue culture is an anticipated means for the
conservation of germplasm and rapid propagation of the endangered plant species
for their therapeutic active phytoconstituents for medicinal purposes. This
technique is helpful for the mass conservation of plants and helps in procuring
the generation of improved and advanced upgraded quality of herbal medicines. The
germplasm produced through the micropropagation are pathogen-free, mass
production leads to the synthesis of active metabolites which are important
from commercial point of view. The techniques of plant tissue culture

and serves as antidote in
mushroom poisoning. Atropa belladonna
treats menstrual cramps, motion sickness, inflammations, diseases of peptic and
colon ulcers. Datura is also
considered to be medicinally important genus with many species found in our
country namely D.inoxia, D.metel, D.stramonium, D.ferox and
many more. This genus contains a wide range of active alkaloids such as
scopolamine, hyoscyamine and atropine. The species of this plant act as
anodyne, antispasmodic, antihelmintic, aphrodisiac, emetic and treat skin
disorders, jaundice, ulcers and bronchitis. Withania
is important genus and one species namely Withania
somnifera also known as Ashwagandha is great tonic having antibiotic,
diuretic, narcotic, antispasmodic and anti-cancerous properties. Nicotiana has antiviral, antioxidant,
antibacterial, insecticidal and anti-glaucomic activity. Hyosycamus members are often used with other plants to create
psychoactive properties. Leaves of some species are used to cure asthma and
whooping cough.
